Bone Density Testing

Bone Density testingWe now have our second state-of-the-art bone densitometer that measures bone density at the hip and the spine in three minutes. We intend to stay on the cutting edge of osteoporosis screening and treatment. We have a new Densitometer, keeping with our philosophy of providing the best technology available to our patients. We have been providing bone density testing to our patients since 2001.

 

Women may call the office to schedule a bone density test at the time of the annual exam or at any convenient time. You will receive the results "on the spot" and a copy of your complete bone density examination will be sent to your primary physician.

 

The National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis state that a bone mineral density test is the only reliable way to diagnose osteoporosis and determine the risk of the future fracture.

 

FemurBone mineral density testing is recommended for:

  • Women with additional risk factors besides menopause.
  • Thin
  • Caucasian, Asian
  • Low calcium diet
  • Lack of exercise
  • Smoking - now or in the past
  • Caffeine or alcohol use
  • All women over 65.
  • Postmenopausal women who have had fractures.
  • Women considering therapy for osteoporosis.
  • Women who have been on HRT for prolonged periods

 

Also, women taking thyroid medication or steroids (for asthma, etc) are at increased risk of osteoporosis.
